Content Summary: Provenzal understands that Irving has been playing 'The Cup' for some time. Provenzal believes that this is substantially a translation from the Italian of a drama entitled 'Camma' written by the late Professor Guiseppe Montanelle; Provenzal holds the copyright. Some time since he prevented Ristori from playing without his consent. He is not desirous of taking legal action but must insist on his rights as owner of the copyright. He was to have executed the deed at Messrs Lewis & Lewis at 12 that morning but found the assignment had not been engrossed. The appointment is now 11 o'clock on Monday, causing him difficulty. Stoker suggested he should write to Irving that night. Will Irving let him have £5 on account until Monday?

Content Summary: Mr Irving desires him to express regret that Provenzal has been so curiously misinformed with regards to 'The Cup' and his asserted rights therein. The play is the work of 'our poet Tennyson' and has nothing in common with that of Signor Montanelli (sic) except that the story of both plays is taken from Plutarch - a source where Shakespeare drew certain of his plots.
