Author: Arnold, Augustus Walter >>
Address: Giffords Hall, Stoke, Colchester
Recipient: Irving, Sir Henry >>
Address: -
Date: [1880?], Jan., 1
Document Type: Letter (4 p.)
Content Summary: He mentions the special performance, and would have come, but will be abroad. People write and congratulate Arnold and hope he profits. He will be writing to Mr Hurst. He is delighted at the good news, except that Irving will make much money and retire. Arnold is too old to play Shylock. The old Beef Steak Rooms will be best if not too small; the stage would be draughty, the saloon larger, but the rooms best and the new entrance from Exeter Street convenient. Arnold will be in London permanently on 2nd July.
Published: -
Notes: Arnold was lessor of the Lyceum and Hurst the box office manager. This probably refers to the celebration of the 100th performance of 'The Merchant of Venice' on 14th February 1880, which was held on the stage after a reception in the Beef Steak Room.
