Date: [1881?]
Document Type: Letter (3 p.)
Content Summary: He sends Act 2 - the other acts will be short - 3 & 4 are nearly ready. He would like Irving's opinion on one point. In the original Act 2 opens in a drinking celler in Leipzig with a great deal of action for Meph[istopheles]. He sends the translation. He has written but must retouch. He connects it with the play by introducing Marguerite's brother. They are praising their lasses when Valentine asserts his sister's virtue and they all drink to her, then enter Meph & Faust. He describes Meph's words and actions and the considerations against this as it may make the 2nd Act very long. Wills is better.

Content Summary: Ledger says he has destroyed Clement Scott's letter. He wishes she would confide to him what the person addressed by Mr H.C. really means. When can he expect the letters about Bram Stoker?
Published: -
Notes: Marked "Private" at head. Edward Ledger was editor of 'The Era' and Clement Scott, an early friend of Florence Irving, worked for 'The Daily Telegraph'. Irving seems to have had a difficult relationship with Ledger. These letters are mysterious. In another letter Jennings asks Florence whether she can remember the exact wording of a letter from Stoker.

Date: [1881?]
Document Type: Letter (1 p.)
Content Summary: He finished the 3rd Act that night. It has plenty of humour for Mephisto[pheles] and a powerful ending. Did Irving like Act 2 which he outlines? He sends 2 sketches Godwin did for him of an old German town. He describes the sounds and movement and foliage - ivy shining in moonlight on Martha's cottage also the Hartz mountains in the last act with sheet lightning - witches old & young - Faust under spell - Meph amusing - apparition of Margaret with red circle round neck - dungeon scene very strong for M.
Published: -
Notes: Letters 4387-88 also refer to Godwin's sketches but they come from a later address and this letter seems part of the earlier sequence of composition.
