He cannot rest before congratulating Irving on the perfect success of the evening. He could not say before others how much Irving's speech touched him and struck a chord with all. It clealy revealed Irving's difficuties and delicacies as well as his triumphs, and writing from experience, he never heard a better speech suited to the occasion. He listened as Irving's friend, with a bitter remembrance of old Houghton's escapade, most jealously to Lord Lytton and approved his words as full of appreciation. No one present will forget the evening. |

Lord Houghton had made a somewhat critical speech at the dinner to Irving on 14th February 1880. Each celebrated the 100th nights, of 'The Merchant of Venice' and 'Romeo and Juliet' respectively. |
