| Content Summary: |
He expands on his financial difficulties mentioned the previous August. His fortune of £70,000 is still tied up. Irving can help. Marshall's family, except a sister in a convent, is against him. He has sold all his books of value but cannot pay £400 due immediately. He would repay a loan from Irving at the usual interest on the security of his copyrights. Irving has already been kind. He assigns him the copyright of 'Robert Emmet' for the £250 paid. He will give copies of the additions by 1st December. It would make a good novel. Marshall has had 10 years ill luck and cannot get his plays staged and has lost confidence. Irving's friendship has been the one bright spot. |

The copyrights mentioned are: 'False Shame', 'Family Honour', a one act play Irving has (No. 50) and a new comedy never acted. The three first had been performed in the 1870s. |

| Content Summary: |
He thanks Irving for the cheque and agrees with his suggestion for payment of the balance. He hopes his telegram did not harrass him, but his friends wonder if letters are always opened. He does not think £500 quite enough for a 5-act tragedy. He thinks Wills received £700 for 'Rienzi' and suggests the same price for the same rights. This leaves a balance of £400. He would like to keep the literary right of eventual publication. For his last blank-verse piece he received £350 for three years ... He hopes Irving may before long read the too much delayed 'Edgar & Lucy' [Ravenswood]. |
