Content Summary: He is giving the prizes at the British Orphan Asylum, Slough on 4th July and cannot fulfil a second engagement. However all honour is due to a man who, knowing the stage's place in human recreations, tries to make it elevating and pure. Manchester supposes no one can succeed completely, but one who tries deserves almost as much.

Notes: Addressed "Dear Sir" but presumably to Clement Scott. Irving did not revive 'Othello' after 1881 when 2nd June was not a Saturday so this may refer to another production. Other possible years are 1888, 1894 & 1900.

Content Summary: He makes a request he feels Irving will not be able to grant. His daughter at school in London with three or four fellows wants to see Irving in 'Charles I'. They cannot get places and she has asked her father to approach Irving. He does not like to refuse although without hope. Perhaps Irving will send a line to say it is impossible which will make them give up.

Content Summary: Lengthy screed headed 'The Poor Player' giving Duffield's views on the need to open a West End Theatre with two-penny seats and six-penny boxes for the uplift of the poor. Much detail about working-class conditions written in mildly eccentric form. Written from his sick-bed with address withheld so that Irving does not feel he must reply.

Notes: Duffield refers to a book written some years before with Walter Pollock: 'Masston', 1877 and in a postscript to that day's 'Standard' which was later unenthusiastic about Irving's tour in America.
