Notes: Note: Mems sent if however 'Louis XI' is not being, will send for other night. This seems most likely to refer to 1883 when performances of 'Louis XI' were given on July 23rd - 25th. In 1879 the play was performed in the week of June 20th.

Document Type: Letter (3 p.)

C.S. in the London News was splendidly telling and it will do well in "paras" in America. He hopes to see Brereton before taking his little holiday.
Published: -
Notes: Probably written before the first visit to America in 1883 when the Lyceum season ended on 28th July. Austin Brereton went in advance to handle the American press for Irving. C.S. is probably Clement Shorter writing in the 'Illustrated London News', but might possibly be Clement Scott.

Author: Irving, Sir Henry >>
Address: Grand Hotel, Liverpool
Recipient: Escott, Thomas Hay Sweet >>
Address: -
Date: 1883, Sept., 27
Document Type: Letter (4 p.)
Content Summary: He asks Escott to write to cheer him and hopes they will meet for 10 minutes in the afternoon on Sunday week. He will get to town in the morning. He has taken "Daddy" Yates out for a trip which will please his father & mother who love him dearly. He is curious yet confident about the October 'Fortnightly'. The circulation may go up as someone he respects has ordered 50 copies and he thinks 50 more will follow. He has not seen Russell who has been bitten by a "dawg" and Irving is trying to write an amusing piece which he will show Escott. Best wishes to Mrs & Edith Escott.
Published: -
Notes: Irving was about to sail for America, but returned briefly to London first. "Daddy" Yates may be Edmund Yates' son. Edward Russell's article 'Irving's interpretation of Shakespeare' was to appear in the October 'Fortnightly' and the respected person buying copies is probably a joking reference to Irving himself.
