Thanks for that morning's letter. He has been glad to hear of the success of Irving's "journey due West". He is alone with his daughter Matilda now 51, with his wife at Woodlands. He hopes to get her to Eastbourne and himself to Brighton, inviting Irving & Stoker there on Monday but must see them before they go and would meet them in town for lunch. Regards to Miss Terry who has been suffering and to Stoker & Irving. (Postscript:) Thanks for invitation for Sunday 7th but cannot come. Matilda's greetings. |

This seems to refer to Irving's American tour; and Levy's wife Esther died in March 1884. The 7th was a Sunday in May 1882, January 1883 and October 1883 when Irving came up briefly to London from Liverpool before embarking on 11th October. |

Will Stoker sign and return any of the few enclosed accounts he wants paid. Terry is keeping everything printed about Irving Tours - does Stoker want duplicates? He encloses cash statements ending October 5th & 12th. Please give the enclosed to Mr Loveday. It relates to a Miss [Mrs] Wilmore, mother of Miss Coleridge who is a member of Irving's Company. One or two little accounts are not yet in so he cannot enclose that week's statement which he will forward the next Tuesday. He hopes the voyage may be beneficial. |

Presumably the 12th October statement could not be sent. The actress Amy Coleridge, 1866-1951, was still with the Lyceum Company in the 1890s. This arrangement is referred to in Letter 5456. |

He has received Stoker's letter of 16th with two cheques of £50. He encloses the last week's statement and will soon send list rearranged into "Lyceum needs" and "Salaries for American tour". Mr Cusack wrote to say he had disposed of his interest in the Lyceum. Terry sent his letter to George Lewis and called on him for advice. Mr Lewis told him to say that while not assenting he would place no obstacle in his way. Privately Lewis told him that Cusack had a perfect right to assign his lease as he thought fit, and as he was troublesome they might be the gainers. Mr Pearce is now in possession and seems a superior man. Terry had talked to him mentioning several complaints made during Cuscak's tenancy and hoping they would cease. Pearce said he would do his best and attend to any complaints from Mr Abud or Terry, hinting Terry might help him to get his lease renewed. Mary Anderson continues to average £300 weekly. 'Galatea' will be produced on Dec. 8th. Cast includes Barnes, Macklin, H. Kemble, Amy Roselle, Annie Rose and Mary Anderson. Rehearsals are under W.S. Gilbert's direction. How Terry would like to be in America with them. He wonders how they find the Americans at home as he finds them overbearing and uncultivated. He, Hirst [Hurst] and all the old hands are delighted with the financial results of the New York season. Congratulations to Irving & Stoker. Encloses letter from Mrs Stoker. |

Cusack ran the refreshment Saloon at the Lyceum and George Lewis was Irving's solicitor. Abud was the manager of Mary Anderson's company leasing the Lyceum. |

Stoker's letter of 24th November received with cheque for £100. He notes comments on Pitt and Biggs' accounts. He has paid Biggs £5.12.1 for labour, fittings, drilling for six new battens the order for which was given by H.J. Loveday. He wishes to hear as there will be more to pay. He paid Pitt £2.14.2, half deemed special, and half for a man, Kerton, attending the Mule before Stoker decided to sell him. The Mule is better and he hopes to sell him in a few days. He will refund Coutts the £50 lent. He is glad to hear all is well - Stoker says nothing about himself. Thanks for the kind thought about Terry's sister Ellen - he sends his love. (Postscript:) He encloses a letter. |

| Content Summary: |
Stoker's letter of 27th received, with Press Opinions. Stoker should have answers about Biggs and Pitt. He gives details about situation with Knight, listing payment of £2 for labour on new painting frame at Loveday's order. The Mule is virtually sold to Knight for £10. He repeats his arrangements for the Pony. Stoker should inform him if he prefers grass. Mr Abud is very active and the House as Stoker would wish it. Destroy the Lyceum account posted on 6th as he found a clerical error, omitting the £50 loan from Coutts. He refunded it to Mr Logan - see the up to date account. The Relatives' account is correct - balance was £64 but he has since made payments of £39.10.0. He has enough to transfer to Relatives' account but would be glad of £100 or two to keep the two distinct. Lyceum account will not exceed £10 per week but the other is £39.10.0 weekly. He encloses a letter from Mrs Bram Stoker, one for Irving, and Sandells' account. Weather has been mild and springlike but is now more seasonable. He encloses Biggs' request for materials for the new battens ordered by Loveday; they are not fixed but ought to be and the fixings paid for by Mr Abud - the present ones have been working day and night on 'Galatea' and 'Comedy and Tragedy' scenery, all built up and much more carpenter than scenic artist. He sends programme for the night's show. Will letters forwarded to Brevoort House New York reach Stoker? All well there. Best wishes to all from all. |
