Notes: This letter addressed to Sampson's pen-name Carados is a copy, as is a reply from Irving absolutely refuting the accusation, but asking Sampson to publish nothing about it. Irving would like to offer £100 to challenge Brickenden to prove his allegation.

Content Summary: Cannot it be put down that Irving played [Hamlet] for 200 consecutive nights at the Lyceum? He would like it to read it would be found that in the production of the play at the Lyceum (30th October, 1878) Mr Irving played Hamlet for two hundred consecutive nights. The alterations had been made by him in accordance with the experience gained by frequent representations of the character of Hamlet.
