Ought to have repaid Irving's loan of £150 before this and is sorry he cannot do it this day. Disappointed with the run of 'Bachelors' and debts incurred at the Opera Comique have come upon him through misunderstanding on signed agreement etc. He would prefer Irving not to answer this letter. He has not forgotten his obligation and hopes to repay in a day or two. |

| Content Summary: |
Did Irving get his note two days before? The great Ouida accepted a supper for the next day week (Saturday 15th) at the United Hotel, but as she particularly wants to meet Irving he has not asked anyone else until he knows if the evening will suit Irving. Will he write to Chatsworth, South Cliff, Eastbourne where Merivale must take his wife for her health, 'The Stage' having forbidden her Rome. He supposes Irving has been unable to settle the matter but would like his opinion of the unfair criticism made of a young lady's first play. There should be an apology. |

This may refer to criticism of 'The Butler' a play written by Mrs Merivale in collaboration with her husband, which opened at Toole's Theatre on 6/12/1886. See also Letter 2425. |

| Content Summary: |
He refers to the Witches Kitchen which he has not yet seen. He thanks Irving for the excellent lively party notably involving George Augustus [Sala]. He heard Irving left early and supposes [Thomas?] Thorne, [David] James and Johnie [Toole] managed Monday's performance. He will be in touch again as he has seen the magistrate Armitage. |

| Notes: |
Confusingly addressed to "Sir Henry" presumably as a joke. The Witches Kitchen scene was added to 'Faust' in November 1886 and this seems to refer to the large dinner to mark the 300th performance of the play given by Irving at the Continental Hotel on 30th January 1887. Burnand's legal business is unidentified. |
