She is tired having been seeing much acting in Paris, but listening to 'Macbeth' the night before explained all. The French stage does not educate the people morally, but Irving does. She praises his work. She is told Irving leaves her letters about - this would be better in the fire. |

| Content Summary: |
After comparing Mr Serle's comments with the suggestions formerly made by Mr Knowles, Mr Irving and himself the previous summer, she thinks Tennyson should shorten the play by the necessary half hour as he distrusts their judgment. She wishes to produce it at Easter. The spurious play failed in America so there is no hurry for a legal contract. |

Asking Irving to consider her as principal actress at the Lyceum the next Spring. Salvini is her sponsor. She would like to be considered for Lady Macbeth. |

| Notes: |
Written in French in the third person. She may possibly be identified with the French author Henriette Verdier Winteler de Weindeck. Salvini appeared in London in 1875, and Irving first played Macbeth in September that year. She is presumably not the noble English lady recommended in Letter 3693. |

'The Times' that morning says he should lose no time if he wants to see 'Macbeth', and since he has been ill since he saw 'Hamlet' he will be better able mentally to compare Thane and Dane. He asks for a Box for Thursday before he is buried in the awful Amateur business with rehearsal problems, and after Thursday he is at The Old Ship at Brighton. If Irving can leave a card for him (any part of the house) at the Club. He thinks Mrs Vere will be a success if her domestic grief does not sadden her spirit, but Irving will make allowance for her and Miss Nevil, both maiden efforts. |

'Macbeth' opened on 25th September. Mrs Vere and Miss Nevil are possibly involved in the Amateur dramatics. |
