She only makes one observation - for the death scene to be in darkness. Salvini was magnificent in the Southern manner, but there is something English about Othello. Both the Wigans are there and she is going to fetch the Duchess of S[utherland]. She will not trouble Irving about the Lane Show. She will be able to get it straight from Mr Wills. |

| Notes: |
The letter seems to be written before the first night of 'Othello' on 14th February 1876. This may be too early for the Drury Lane performance to be 'The School for Scandal' for J.B. Buckstone on 8th June. |

Her mother thinks Lowne will be glad to know how much better Irving is that day. He will be able to act at the matinee the next day. Mr Critchett does not think his face will be discoloured. He had a narrow escape, for if the foil had hit a little higher he might have lost his sight. United kind regards. |

On mourning paper. It is not clear if this was an accident when fencing with Lowne or during a performance, perhaps of 'Hamlet' which was revived after 'Macbeth' in 1875. Hezekiah Bateman died in March 1875. George Anderson Critchett was an eye surgeon. This accident does not seem to have been recorded. |

She will only go up in time for the play on Monday and sleeps at Stafford House. She must return early on Tuesday for unpleasant legal business which she describes. Gennoud (her servant) is going too and she does not know how she will manage without him. He so knows her past life that it is like losing a bit of her identity. She is sorry Irving cannot come on Sunday - telegram any Sunday he can. Glycerine gargling only brings temporary relief. |

Presumably Irving's sore throat was his excuse for not going. |
