Elmore has just had note from Mr Mathews asking him to bring Irving to Mathew's house on Sunday for lunch. He will call for Irving at 1.30 if convenient. Was delighted with the all too little he saw of Irving the previous night. He does not know Irving's address. |

A long musing on Irving's Essay 'on Amusements' as reported in the 'Daily Telegraph' and as printed in 'All the Year Round' and on the status of actors. Only Irving and Helen Faucit are worthy of consideration as elevating the stage by their intelligent performances. He especially praises Irving's Richelieu, a greater performance than Macready's. He regretted a lack of reply to his last two letters but has realised that they may have been missed when Irving left town. |

Rumours are circulating why she is not appearing in Buckstone's benefit (the real one - being abroad - left out). Her husband heard a new one in his Chambers - because she would not act in the same play as Irving. To scotch this she would be happy to appear at his Benefit. Could he play Sir Tristram in 'King René's Daughter' and Swinbourne play King René? It is only an hour long and Irving can do the principal roles for the rest of the evening. It must be at night because she hates the dis-illusion of the light. |

Irving played Joseph Surface in 'The School for Scandal' at J.B. Buckstone's benefit, and Helena Martin at Irving's benefit on 23rd July. |

Irving's suggestion of 'The Lady of Lyons' for his benefit takes her breath away. 24th June is convenient. As for the Lady - she is unused to the heat - and has no appropriate dress, which would be costly. Could Irving do portions of 'Hamlet' after 'King René's Daughter'? Will he call to talk it over? |

Could a patient named Greenfield in the Hospital for Hip disease be kept in, though the time has nearly expired. They would be doing a great kindness to deserving people. He would be grateful for a reply. |

It would be tempting to identify the correspondent with Frederick Howard Marsh, 1839-1915, of St Bartholomew's Hospital, but there were three orthopaedic hospitals. Irving gave a reading in aid of the London Hospital at the Crystal Palace in early July 1876. Greenfield is not yet identified. |
