Address: -
Date: 1900, Dec., 21 Thursday

Content Summary: Bancroft has agreed to give his Dickens reading for the Actors' Benevolent Fund benefit if Irving will be chairman. Bancroft thinks Irving will be acting round London during February, and if he chooses any Monday, Thursday or Friday the programme could take place either there or at the Haymarket. Alexander has not told the Committee as Bancroft stipulates Irving's presence. Alexander hopes this is convenient.
Published: -
Notes: The answer seems to be that Irving is away all January and cannot act, BS 21/12/00. Irving was on tour in February and March 1901. December 21 was in fact a Friday.

Date: 1894, July, 17
Document Type: Letter (3 p.)
Content Summary: He would be glad to do anything for "Henry" but immediately after the season on Satuday week Phipps is to make alterations on and round stage. If possible he wants 3rd-8th September himself for rehearsals before opening in Leeds on 10th. If week 10th -15th is any use "Henry" is welcome to the stage unless Phipps' workmen make it impossible. (Postscript possibly in Irving's hand:) Stoker might see Phipps ...
Published: -
Notes: At head: no use 21/7/94. The Lyceum was let, and Irving needed rehearsal space for his autumn tour. Charles Phipps was a theatre architect. Alexander seems to be objecting to Stoker's calling Irving "Henry" to him.

Content Summary: Miss E. Penrose, Principal of Bedford College, has asked him for the loan of a Greek chair from 14th-19th June for a student performance of the 15th Idyll of Theocritus. Not owning one, he remembered the one Posthumous uses in the banquet scene in 'Cymbeline' and asks for a loan to the College. A loan from Irving would render real service to the College and oblige Alma Tadema.

Content Summary: He intends to start for America on 10th. He had hoped to see Irving in London and sail from Southampton but must take the Werra at Bremen. Can Irving send a letter of recommendation to friends in New York. Alternatively he may be able to do Irving some service there during his stay. He wishes continued success as Benedick. (Postscript:) at Thalia Theatre, New York.
Published: -
Notes: In English, written by a secretary or translator, addressing Irving as "My dear friend". Irving, who was planning his own visit to America, sent letters to [James] McHenry, Lowen(Lowell?), [A.E.A.] Buck, [William] Winter, [Laurence] Barrett and [Dion] Boucicault.

Date: 1879, Feb., 11
Document Type: Letter (3 p.)
Content Summary: Her compliments to Irving. She will not play Madame Deschappelles the next Saturday morning, or until he revives it at the Lyceum with her in the role. She is writing to Mrs B[ernard] Beere to say so without mentioning Irving. They had not rehearsed it and it was a rapid verbal agreement so that she forgot the action would be unwise before she appeared at the Lyceum. When she remembered she wrote to Irving.
Published: -
Notes: See Letter 5108. It was presumably not widely known that Irving was to revive 'The Corsican Brothers' on 18th September 1880. The note of the answer 11/2/79 is unclear.

Content Summary: Mrs B[ernard] Beere has asked her to play Madame Deschappelles for her the next Saturday morning. Does he object? If so she will refuse. She would have refused without troubling Irving except for a continuance.
Published: -
Notes: Lyceum receipt stamp 11 Feb 79. It was customary to ask for such permission - the continuance presumably meant she had played the part from 'The Corsican Brothers' for Mrs Beere before. For her response to Stoker's reply see Letter 7625.

Content Summary: Thanks to Irving for box for 'Faust' when he could not get tickets. Sorry Irving cannot come to lunch but expects Mr & Mrs Stoker on Thursday. Will Stoker explain this to Irving: He may have heard of Miss Sara de Groot a reciter, occasionally on the Dublin stage. Dowden knew her father slighly. She is a young, bright & clever Jewess and asked Dowden to get her an interview with Irving. He gave her a letter of introduction because he thinks she has promise and Irving's advice would be useful. The Lady Mayoress had promised to introduce her at the Mansion House, but she wanted a quieter interview.
Published: -
Notes: The Lyceum company was in Dublin from 19th November - 1st December. A S. de Groot appeared briefly in London in 1891.
