When Irving said he would make room on his tour, Mr Wyndham asked Valentine to remain at the Criterion in Mr [H.A.] Jones' play for the autumn, which he accepted thinking it would fill the time until Irving required him. Now Mr Wyndham says there is no part for him and he is unexpectedly thrown out of work. He would be glad if he could go on tour with Irving. |

He is there for 4th week, and as Irving is to arrive on Sunday, he asks for a few minutes' conversation. They go to Liverpool but not until evening or late afternoon, so could meet at the station or he could call at Irving's hotel. |

Note: See me 3 4 pm 21/9/94 - but not came about (?) Waller wrote to Bram Stoker on 22nd September thanking him for a letter dated 21st and saying he would not bother them the next day as a few words to Irving (Letter 5408) would do as well. |

He had wanted to see Irving to ask, if his theatre were not open at the beginning of the year, that he would be present at the first night at the Haymarket. He is producing a new play by Oscar Wilde probably on Wednesday 2nd January, but they would alter the date to suit Irving. He would have liked to tell Irving personally how flattered he was by the offer made to him some time before which he was sorry not being free to accept, but since he did not see him in Birmingham he must await another opportunity - perhaps at Liverpool where Irving follows them in a fortnight. |

Inexplicable note: Dy George blue HI 24/9/94. See Letter 5407. 'An Ideal Husband' opened on 3rd January 1895, and 'King Arthur' at the Lyceum on 12th January but it is not known if Irving attended the former. |

He wired Irving that evening when he received the telegram. He could accept the offer to take Terriss's place from September. He has a tour booked from August to November for himself and his wife in Wilde's 'A Woman of No Importance' but can send someone in his place. Would Irving make engagements for about 4 months from beginning of September, to be renewed if desired, and if he can arrange to postpone or find a substitute in the play he is arranging to produce on his own account the next January or February. He has not absolutely agreed to appear himself, but cannot decided at that distance and needs to discuss matters in England. He is travelling for his wife's health, not pleasure, and returns at the end of July. Would Irving reply as soon as possible as he would have to find a substitute provincial managers will accept. |

Irving's note reads: Yes quite agree - have written. They obviously decided against the engagement; see Letter 5408. |
