Records - 1461 to 1470 of 1542
Author: Wyndham, Charles
Address: Criterion Theatre, Piccadilly, W.
Recipient: Irving, Henry
Address: [London]
Date: [1895], [Feb.?]
Document Type: Letter (3 p.)
Content Summary: He had told Webster he would not stand in his way over the transfer in about 3 weeks, but he had thought Hare's play was coming out at Easter and that F[orbes] R[obertson] would play with Irving until 2 or 3 nights before the new production. Perhaps Irving can manage to give him the longest possible time - 3, 4 or 5 weeks. The part is peculiar and he has no time to interview every possible applicant - Haviland would not be suitable. They have both been badly affected by the weather. (Postscript:) He had given him [Webster] permission for rehearsals long before.

Author: Wills, William Gorman
Address: Garrick Club
Recipient: Irving, Henry
Address: [London]
Date: [1884], [July?]
Document Type: Letter (4 p.)
Content Summary: He fears Barrett's new play 'Brutus' by the late Lord Lytton will disadvantage 'Rienzi' as it must concern the Brutus who suddenly finds himself a hero. His old mother very much wants to read 'Olivia'. He asks for a copy there. Something Irving said made him think their agreement was for 3 years, but he finds it is 5. He would not be hard on resale transactions. He has sold English and colonial rights to Irving and would have liked to add America, but as Irving knew had long before sold those rights to an American actor for £500. Irving can trust him in sending a copy. As he was away he has not seen Irving's Malvolio. He was obliged for the stall and hopes to return soon and see it.
Published: -
Notes: 'Twelfth Night' had opened at the Lyceum on 8th July 1884; Bulwer Lytton's 'Brutus' was staged on 26th February 1885, and 'Rienzi' was never produced. Irving guarded 'Olivia' jealously and eventually bought the American rights from Wills's brother.

Content Summary: Some years before Irving expressed an interest in the dramatisation of her novel 'Marcella'. Isaac Henderson had advised her to keep the production based on her novel 'Eleanor' to herself in 5 matinees. Addison Bright is her agent. [George] Alexander offered 3 days but withdrew after the success of 'Paolo and Francesca' and [William] Gillette was then at the Lyceum and Irving in America. Bright will send Irving the play and she sets out stringent demands for its production: Irving to produce and play Manisty, with Marion Terry as Eleanor and Miss [Elizabeth] Robins as Alice, Mrs Ward to approve the rest of the cast. She describes the "woman's play" which she wants him to read at once and give an immediate answer. She does not return until 14th May and the 2nd week in June is most convenient for the play. Irving in the cast would interest the public. (Postscript:) Money is no object regarding 'Eleanor'.
