Date: [1876], June, 14 Wednesday
Document Type: Letter (3 p.)
Content Summary: They return the next day. Will Irving let her know soon about rehearsals? She would require the scenes to be set, and gives dates. She is surprised that Mrs Bateman has used Miss Faucit as a name in her notice to the public. (Postscript) In further announcements please say "IOLANTHE (The Blind Princess), 'King René's Daughter' translated from the Danish of Heinrich Hertz by Theodore Martin"

Date: 1877, Jan., 11
Document Type: Letter (4 p.)
Content Summary: Mr [Henry] Compton has asked her to do something for his benefit. Such a motley performance is difficult for her - could they do anything together? - an act from Shakespeare - or 'King René's Daughter' as acted for Irving's benefit if Mrs Bateman would allow. She finds monster performances painful and derogatory to her art. It would save writing if Irving could call on Sunday after morning service? Mr Martin goes to the Prince of Wales at Sandringham the next day and will not be back until Monday. He is against her acting in this mélange, but they would do anything for Mr Compton who they like and esteem. (Postscript) She may be out of town anyway and then cannot appear.

Document Type: Letter (4 p.)
Content Summary: She thanks Irving for his advice and has written to Mr Compton (who had made a great point of asking her to act) saying she would do a scene or act from Shakespeare with Irving, early the last Saturday, but has had no acknowledgement. She concludes that it musy have gone to the executive committee, who take no individual responsibility! Therefore she is withdrawing her offer on the advice of her husband. She knows Irving shares her feelings.

Content Summary: He thinks there is a pension of £100 a year with the Charterhouse Fellowship. He wonders whether W.M. knew this? Perhaps it may solve the difficulty of the attendance which he requires. Could Irving bring it to his knowledge. Does Irving remember Sir Henry and Lady Blake who supped with him at the Lyceum? They are now in England and hope to see 'Macbeth' before they leave.
Published: -
Notes: Writing difficult to decipher. Note states that Irving answered on 03/12/1888. W.M may be William Thomas Moncrieff who did go into the Charterhouse. See also letters from the Blakes.

Date: 1878, June, 19
Document Type: Letter (8 p.)
Content Summary: She sends a promised cabinet photograph of herself from Mayall. She discusses 'Vanderdecken' at some length. Wills has not shown his usual skill in character development and Irving has a thankless task. Whilst praising some details she thinks the play wearisome. Could he wind up the season in a more lively manner? Could they play Benedick and Beatrice together? If Mrs Bateman would give the theatre one evening for the benefit of the G[enera]l T[heatrica]l Fund she would act and repeat the play for Mrs Bateman's benefit. She expects the arrangements are made in which case she trusts Irving will not repeat her remarks. They go to Wales in early July.

Notes: Irving probably replied that he was not ready for Benedick, as she mentions this in a letter from 15th May, [1879?]

Content Summary: She has heard of the disastrous finances of the General Theatrical Fund. She wrote to the Committee offering her services for a benefit. The Committee has written that they will consider the offer immediately. Can Irving advise or act, and meet the Committee the next Saturday between 2 and 3? Which theatre should she perform in? She knows that Irving is not ready on Benedick - what about Jacques - not fatiguing - has Irving studied the humorous melancholy gentleman?
Published: -
Notes: Jacques in 'As You Like It'. The Fund declined her offer; see her letter of 25th June.

Document Type: Letter (4 p.)
Content Summary: She sends an application from an actor (?) - she had hoped the Actors' Benevolent Fund would give him help. She comments on actors and their means. Many actors and actresses show want of education; amateurs, in this, are their superiors. The Martins' friend Mr (Froude?) has given impressions of 'Much Ado'. Has Irving received her Imogen letter? She has had a long visit from Ruskin. Sir Theodore did not want Ruskin to have a copy of the Imogen letter, so it was a triumph to make a convert of him. She wonders how Irving feels in living in Sicily so long.
Published: -
Notes: Helena Martin wrote a series of papers on Shakespeare's heroines. Sicily refers to the long run of 'Much Ado About Nothing'.

Content Summary: She sends a gift for the Actors' Benevolent Fund with wishes for its permanent success. If, like Alleyne at Dulwich College, Irving might found a school for the education of actors' children, it is much required. Members in the humble ranks of their profession seem the worst educated people in the world. She has noticed this in the many letters she receives from those who claim to have acted with her - ignorant of spelling and grammar. The stage demands high culture no less than natural abilities. She wishes there were some previous examination. Public and critics are too tolerant, but should they be?

Content Summary: She has had a letter from Henry Loraine with whom she had acted years previously in Liverpool. She remembers him as a tall, well looking man and a very respectable actor. He has been turned down by the Actors' Benevolent Fund. She asks Irving's help - possibly it is a misunderstanding. Keep it private from Loraine.

Content Summary: About the appeal to the [Actors' Benevolent?] Fund. See from the enclosed that Mr [Henry] Loraine had not heard from the Fund when he wrote to Sir Theodore. She comments on what constitutes an emergency and that the Secretary needed the right to dispense small sums. She thanks Irving for his prompt action. They are going out of town along with fashionable London.
