In different circumstances she would have come to see Irving and his first Polonius, but the friends occupying her box are expecting an interesting evening. A Victorian actor must be grateful to be so appreciated with a Shakespearean. Secondly she asks him to get her five tickets anywhere for the unfortunate employees of Drury Lane. There is a benefit at the Agricultural Hall, but she does not know when, or the manager. She encloses £5 for this if Irving could send it to save her trouble.

Content Summary: Fresh air will do Irving good. Mr Hassard told her his hospitality lasted long on Friday. Several friends come to drive quietly with her. That evening she is going to St Stephen's for a church performance of Handel's Messiah music, portions of which Mrs Brown was fond of, but she never thinks of her as there. The next day she goes to the Flower Mission and will give Irving's order. On Monday she will be among Irving's Easter offerings. She recounts the effect of Hamlet on a school teacher. She does not like the idea of the Exchange Irving mentions. The Théâtre Français might have been accepted as an Institute, but she would not like to put the English stage, which Irving represents in its higher aspect, on a par with anything else. They may discuss this. Could Irving find time to visit his old servants named Smith...

Content Summary: She is taking a young friend to Book 3d so might be out if Irving calls. She asks him to consider the precise way he transfers the previous night's proceeds to the wretched Stratford thing. She looked round his immense and very peculiar audience with satisfaction. She does not know the amount, but thinks it should not be paid without some special notice and for a special part of the Stratford concern. Irving has a battle to fight not unlike his Macbeth, and should lose no advantage, and his contribution to the Fund should not be bundled up and hidden. She is interested in the Great Bills!! and is glad Irving is coming on Friday.

Notes: 'Book 3d' may be the play by Ben Webster also known as 'Novel Expedient'. The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust was set up in 1847. Great Bills are large theatre posters.

Content Summary: She is better with voice returning, but has to stay in so has given her box. Irving's June announcements are clear and attractive. She encloses £5 for Mr Marston's benefit for which Irving lends the Lyceum. They will dine early at 7 with a long evening for the work she has rather selfishly co-opted Irving. Come as early as he likes, but she forgot to tell him the night before she has to see friends between 5 and 6. She hears he played well the previous night. (Postscript) She sends the Chronicle with a letter he would like to read, and refers again to his natural endowments, and to the fuss the Comédie Française are making. How are they to be received?
