Content Summary: Can he come later on? He has been so ill for so long and his doctor has urged him to be careful because of severe bronchial attack. He would like to see Irving afterwards in the Beef Steak room[sic]. He will try to persuade him to give a recitation at Reeves' matinee next May as it will ensure Reeves 'a bumper'. He has lost a small fortune. Irving on his own, no one else. Reeves' people are all anxious to come next Saturday, Mrs Reeves as well. May they use the Box?

Document Type: Letter (2 p.)
Content Summary: Thanks to Irving for complying with his request, and Reeves asks forgiveness for apparent selfishness. If he had thought of the demands made on the chest tones of the voice by Macbeth he should not have asked. Irving's kind letter is like those he received seven or eight years before.

Notes: See Letter 3530. There seems to have been a cooling-off in the relationship, but this may also be a reference to Irving's sore throat which meant he left the cast of 'Macbeth' in January.

Content Summary: Mrs Reeves' description of 'Macbeth' with its glorious surroundings makes Reeves impatient to see it but he will wait until bad weather is past. Then he would like to stay and chat in 'the Beefsteak refectory' [sic]. He cannot give his concert until 6th July but as Irving has agreed he has fixed that date for St. James's Hall. The Crystal Palace people were so dictatorial and unpleasant that Reeves has abandoned the idea of giving it there.

Content Summary: Yet another proof of Irving's generosity. He had endeavoured to keep Maud's wedding quiet but Irving has somehow heard of it. His exquisite present [unspecified] is deeply appreciated by them all, especially the young couple. What shall he sing on 22nd of the month? Anything Irving likes.

Has heard differing opinions of the part and wants to judge for himself. Asks Irving to dine on 6th July and will drive him down after the Concert [at St. James's Hall]. Tamagno is a bad singer but the press will praise him. He is amused at the critics particularly the ass in 'The Times', a nephew of Walter.

Content Summary: Sorry Irving cannot come to dine. Reeves would like to go to the Dinner and sit near Irving if possible. He thinks Sir Morell Mackenzie has been shabbily treated. Thanks for stalls. He has a morning concert but may stay in town and come afterwards. Will Irving give him the names of his two pieces and say where he wants to be placed? He thought last in the first half and fourth in the second. He advises Irving to insure his theatre well as he fears Tamagno will affect him. There can be no doubts about Irving's success in his next venture.
