They sail the next day and he hopes to see Toole at the end of March. Greetings to Arlton and thank him for the "Pieraer(?)". Irving may astonish the Americans with that. He will write when they arrive and sends blessings.

Content Summary: Irving is making satisfactory progress. Press account necessarily guarded, but on Tuesday & Wednesday condition very serious. By Tuesday he told Stoker Hanley impossible and on Wednesday that tour must be cancelled. He discusses Irving's treatment and longstanding condition. He is responding to treatment, and sleeps 9-10 hours. Lloyd-Davies will inform at once of untoward symptoms.

Content Summary: Harry Irving will have seen notice that immediate tour cancelled. Lloyd-Davies told the manager [ Bram Stoker] the day before that imperative, but to confirm called in Dr Foxwell who agreed. Care and complete rest should bring improvement. Irving is confined to bed with a trained nurse in attendance, and is eating. He is a good and helpful patient. Lloyd-Davies will keep Harry informed.

Content Summary: Thanks for kind letter. Irving's condition maintained but perhaps a little affected by talking too long to unexpected visitor. Lung trouble is subsiding and heart stronger. Lloyd-Davies will try to inform Harry Irving nightly to lessen his anxiety. (Postscript:) He agrees that Irving is better alone, even from his own people. He could say things which cannot be written. He will be in Birmingham on Tuesday and could meet Harry there. He writes in confidence.

Notes: The unexpected visitor was probably Ellen Terry who gives an account of the meeting, but Eliza Aria also went to Wolverhampton.

The day before he thought Forrester could have a turn that night but cannot yet manage it. Put the advert in the programmes - it reads well.

Notes: In pencil. Irving was taken ill during the end of the run of 'Hamlet' while 'The Lady of Lyons' was being rehearsed for 17th April. Walter Lacy played Colonel Damas. Forrester played Claudius in 'Hamlet' and possibly Irving thought he might play Hamlet.

Content Summary: God bless Loveday! He is very much better and will be "all right" on Monday. (At head:) Put special Advert overleaf in all dailies on Monday. "Mr Irving having recovered from his severe hoarseness will re-appear as Hamlet - tonight." Put special advert in Observer also, not changing present advert. It will be good to get in any paras. Stoker should write a line to each paper asking them to announce Irving "all right" again.

Love to Mrs Loveday - he hopes Loveday is all right.
