Harry Irving will have seen notice that immediate tour cancelled. Lloyd-Davies told the manager [ Bram Stoker] the day before that imperative, but to confirm called in Dr Foxwell who agreed. Care and complete rest should bring improvement. Irving is confined to bed with a trained nurse in attendance, and is eating. He is a good and helpful patient. Lloyd-Davies will keep Harry informed. |

Thanks for kind letter. Irving's condition maintained but perhaps a little affected by talking too long to unexpected visitor. Lung trouble is subsiding and heart stronger. Lloyd-Davies will try to inform Harry Irving nightly to lessen his anxiety. (Postscript:) He agrees that Irving is better alone, even from his own people. He could say things which cannot be written. He will be in Birmingham on Tuesday and could meet Harry there. He writes in confidence. |

The unexpected visitor was probably Ellen Terry who gives an account of the meeting, but Eliza Aria also went to Wolverhampton. |

Has been in bed since 8 o'clock the previous night with awful cold which seized him in the afternoon. He will stay there until the evening so dismiss the rehearsal until Wednesday when they will do the "Cottage " scenes & Thursday when Lacy can do his scenes. The day before he thought Forrester could have a turn that night but cannot yet manage it. Put the advert in the programmes - it reads well. |

In pencil. Irving was taken ill during the end of the run of 'Hamlet' while 'The Lady of Lyons' was being rehearsed for 17th April. Walter Lacy played Colonel Damas. Forrester played Claudius in 'Hamlet' and possibly Irving thought he might play Hamlet. |

"Our Nell" [Ellen Terry] is too ill to play the next night - the doctor says it will be dangerous for her to go out. He supposes they can only do 'The King and the Miller' and if Loveday could see Barnett he might be able to assemble everyone the next morning. Perhaps 'A Regular Fix' might be ready by Tuesday. Love to Mrs Loveday - he hopes Loveday is all right. |

In fact 'A Regular Fix' was played on Monday 1st June with 'The Corsican Brothers', in place of 'Nance Oldfield'. Harry Barnett was the Lyceum Assistant Stage Manager. |

Delighted Loveday is so much better. Athough they lease a place to rehearse from 29th the company will not be needed till the end of the week - they give a fortnight? There will be plenty to do with Miss Matthison, Miss Fealy & one or two others in meantime. Laurence & his wife are there for a couple of days, staying close by. Love to Mrs Loveday. |
