Recipient: Stoker, Bram (Abraham)
Address: -
Date: 1897, July, 3
Document Type: Letter (3 p.)
Content Summary: He acknowledges receipt of £250 but as he is leaving England that day and will not see Hichens, would Stoker pay £125 each into their respective bank accounts as specified.
Published: -
Notes: Note: Replied as directed 6/7/97. An advance payment for 'The Medicine Man'.

Author: Traill, Henry Duff
Address: 47, Gordon Square, W.C.
Recipient: Stoker, Bram (Abraham)
Address: Lyceum Theatre
Date: 1897, Sept., 10
Document Type: Letter (4 p.)
Content Summary: Thanks for Acts I & II. He has sent Hichens duplicates. He has no particular fancy for Elton, but thinks a dissyllable would be better considering the frequency the name is used and ease of memorising for audience. However if Irving fancies Tregenna - so be it. He supposes 'g' is hard, which he prefers to Trejenna. In haste.

Notes: With stamped envelope. Irving seems to have chosen his name as main character in 'The Medicine Man', by Traill and Robert Hichens.

Author: Traill, Henry Duff
Address: "Literature", Printing House Square, London E.C.
Recipient: Stoker, Bram (Abraham)
Address: -
Date: 1897, Oct., 30
Document Type: Letter (3 p.)
Content Summary: He has done part of the remodelling according to the suggestion. They had been taking it easy knowing 'Peter the Great' was the next production. They hurried before when Stoker told them it was the next play, and could finish it soon, but do not wish to make special exertions unless really required. If so they will rearrange work accordingly.

Author: Traill, Henry Duff
Address: 47, Gordon Square, W.C. [Glasgow]
Recipient: Stoker, Bram (Abraham)
Address: Lyceum Theatre
Date: 1897, Nov., 7
Document Type: Letter (4 p.)
Content Summary: He has done his part in the revision and Hichens will do his immediately, so Stoker will have the whole play before 'Peter the Great' is produced. Stoker's letter was an unpleasant surprise. Does he mean their play will not be produced after 'Peter' unless Sardou is late, or not before the autumn of 1898? He hopes Stoker tells Irving how injurious a postponement it will be to them as it has been announced from the stage.

Notes: Note: Ad HI(?) 10/11/97. With envelope posted in Glasgow on 8th November. 'The Medicine Man', by Traill and Robert Hichens was staged on 4th May 1898, and Sardou's 'Robespierre' not until 15th April 1899.

Author: Traill, Henry Duff
Address: 47, Gordon Square. ["Literature" printed and crossed out]
Recipient: Stoker, Bram (Abraham)
Address: -
Date: 1897, Dec., 5
Document Type: Letter (4 p.)
Content Summary: He sends the revised version of the play - typewritten insertions in Acts II, III & IV show they have strengthened Dr Elton's - or Tregenna's motives. The scientific side is more fully brought out in Act II and that and "revenge" motive are additionally emphasised in Acts III & IV. Both he and Hichens acknowledge the changes have improved the play. They cannot see how to reduce it from 5 acts to 4. It would muddle the dénoument of the "loss story" and confuse the audience. Irving had thought there were only 10 minutes in the 5th Act, but if played deliberately Traill thiks Irving will see more in it.

Content Summary: He has no idea who printed 'Dr Elton'. He thinks Stoker had it printed; they only typed it. His duplicate of Act I has no printer's imprint - so he cannot just have forgotten - nor Hichens either, but he will write and ask him.

Address: 47, Gordon Square, W.C.
Recipient: Stoker, Bram (Abraham)
Address: Lyceum Theatre
Date: 1898, June, 23
Document Type: Letter (4 p.)
Content Summary: He has been bothered with letters from English and foreign dramatic agents applying for German, Austrian, Hungarian, etc. rights in 'The Medicine Man' - all probably not worth the postage, so he has handed the correspondence to Elizabeth Marbury. Can he have the 3 or 4 copies she wants. She keenly wants the American rights. If Irving were to take the play to America himself he would prefer the rights to remain with Irving, but as that is not probable he would like Miss Marbury to try. Traill's wife would like to see the play before it disappears from the stage. Can he have seats for the next Tuesday night?
