Records - 481 to 490 of 1542
Author: Martin, Helena (Helena Faucit)
Address: 31 Onslow Square, SW
Recipient: Irving, Henry
Address: -
Date: 1877, Jan., 11
Document Type: Letter (4 p.)
Content Summary: Mr [Henry] Compton has asked her to do something for his benefit. Such a motley performance is difficult for her - could they do anything together? - an act from Shakespeare - or 'King René's Daughter' as acted for Irving's benefit if Mrs Bateman would allow. She finds monster performances painful and derogatory to her art. It would save writing if Irving could call on Sunday after morning service? Mr Martin goes to the Prince of Wales at Sandringham the next day and will not be back until Monday. He is against her acting in this mélange, but they would do anything for Mr Compton who they like and esteem. (Postscript) She may be out of town anyway and then cannot appear.

Content Summary: She thanks Irving for his advice and has written to Mr Compton (who had made a great point of asking her to act) saying she would do a scene or act from Shakespeare with Irving, early the last Saturday, but has had no acknowledgement. She concludes that it musy have gone to the executive committee, who take no individual responsibility! Therefore she is withdrawing her offer on the advice of her husband. She knows Irving shares her feelings.

Content Summary: They are to meet at Baroness Burdett Coutts' on Monday at 4pm. She is bringing Miss Stokes whose playing is charming and delicate ... Mrs Brown's suggestions as to the quantity of the (acts read?) will tire her friends, but they must try on Monday - she will be open to reason. Miss Stokes would like to take her sister Mrs Griffiths and her 2 children to 'Louis XI'. Will this trouble Irving or should she ask Mrs Bateman? She hopes Irving has recovered from his cold. She saw 2 performances at the Gaiety which she deplores. Are they to build a Shakespearean theatre for such representations?

Notes: They were to read 'The Lady of Lyons' (and other scenes) for Mrs Brown.

Content Summary: Before long she will accept Irving's offer. But she is not so anxious to see this play as his other productions. She has only seen it once and it did not leave a happy remembrance. She discusses the weaknesses of the play and the performances it requires. Bulwer intended the Lady to give the keynotes and she and Claude should work together. She thinks some of the critics misjudge "natural acting" which can mean different things. She hopes Irving is not working too hard. Nothing can compensate for broken health.
Published: L. Irving, p.325.
Notes: Helena Martin created the part of Pauline in 'The Lady of Lyons'. She describes a performance involving Fechter.

Content Summary: She has heard of the disastrous finances of the General Theatrical Fund. She wrote to the Committee offering her services for a benefit. The Committee has written that they will consider the offer immediately. Can Irving advise or act, and meet the Committee the next Saturday between 2 and 3? Which theatre should she perform in? She knows that Irving is not ready on Benedick - what about Jacques - not fatiguing - has Irving studied the humorous melancholy gentleman?
Published: -
Notes: Jacques in 'As You Like It'. The Fund declined her offer; see her letter of 25th June.

Content Summary: She asks for a box for Friday or Saturday evening. She has heard of the great success of 'The Corsican Brothers'. She saw it with Charles Kean and Fechter. Her young cousin is with them. When they return to town in 3 weeks may they see Tennyson's new play. Perhaps Irving would like to see what she has written about the Ophelia of her imagination, written to please her dying friend Miss Jewsbury - she encloses a copy.

Notes: 'The Corsican Brothers' was followed on 3rd January 1881 by 'The Cup'.

Content Summary: Irving's letter has only just reached her due to a wrong number. She is free on Saturday afternoon to use the ticket he has sent. They are going to see Mr [Edwin] Booth in 'King Lear' the next night. They like what they have seen of Booth - he has not the physique of a great actor - but is thoughtful, accomplished and graceful. She hopes Irving will see him before he leaves the country - a great treat. The stage at present has too few such actors. It is sad to see how Mr Booth is surrounded - she hardly knows how he gets on at all. Mr Theodore [Martin] sends regards.

Notes: The ticket was for 'The Cup'.

Content Summary: This is their last chance to see Irving as Digby Grant. They have both been ill - Sir Theodore with influenza and bronchitis. Is there a box for Thursday evening and could they come through Irving's private entrance to save waiting in a draught? Did Irving get her privately printed Juliet letters sent from Brighton a month ago? The Brighton post is probably to blame.
