Proposes to come to the Stafford in Baltimore on Saturday to confabulate (sic). Sir Henry has given his opinion and suggested many changes. Crawford thinks he has the right touch now. Stoker must not let Sir Henry and Miss Terry forget the dinner at the Stafford on Sunday night. Please keep a seat in the corner for him on Saturday night and he will pay for it at the box office.

Suggestions for translators were made by, among others, Sir Edward Burne-Jones and Sir Frederick Pollock, to either of whom this letter could have been addressed. Glencairn Stuart Ogilvie was translating the play for Irving, but he decided against production.

Notes: The play 'Esmond' was a version of W.M. Thackeray's novel by Margaret Oliphant, which does not seem to have been produced. Eton College holds a professionally typed copy of the text. Another play 'Henry Esmond' by Thomas Edgar Pemberton was produced in Edinburgh and London in 1897; the Manchester play is unidentified.

He describes difficulties in sending Irving cigars from Havana which he hopes may arrive before Christmas. It is illegal to send less than 80lbs. Regards to Irving and Miss Terry. Success to 'Cymbeline'. (Postscript:) Irving will have to pay duty of 5s a pound on cigars. (P.S. at head:) He sends a new issue dollar bill with compliments of couple on back. He hopes he draws them as well.
