Content Summary: Enclosed is a letter from old Mrs Stokes who is 82 and played Juliet in 1815 - Glynne(?) Fund - they ought to have a half hour meeting the next week (he will be in town all week and there are deserving cases). They will meet at the Garrick the next Sunday. Give Stoker the letter to keep. Sandringham the last Thursday was a great success and went well. About 200 in an enthusiastic audience and the Prince and Princess [of Wales] charming. Toole had told Mrs Keeley Irving would send a box if she wrote. She is fond of Irving. The Dean of Windsor at Sandringham said Toole reminded him of Liston - perhaps not quite so ugly. (Postscript:) All let that night and next there - then Tunbridge Wells & St Leonards. He hopes he won't meet Master Jones on the Pier at Hastings.

Notes: This is Toole's first command performance at Sandringham on 19th January 1882. The second was on 8th January 1884 when Irving was in America, and the third on 8th January 1886.

Content Summary: Thanks for Irving's sweet letters. He can't write all he feels. Simpson & Lowne are both capital fellows, a little serious - Simpson has been very ill for a long time, consequently a little depressed - they don't quite understand an actor's life when they talk of rest and retirement. Toole expects to end as check taker at the Lyceum at the gallery door. He could shake hands with the audience as they came upstairs if he behaves himself. Bram [Stoker] might get him in the pit, then he could tell anecdotes between the acts. He is still half nervous and low-spirited but does not want to rest. (Postscript at side:) He only plays 'Paul Pry' all the next week.
Published: -
Notes: Lowne was an old friend of Toole; if Simpson is John Palgrave Simpson, he died in 1887.

Content Summary: He thanks Irving for his long letter, and will write more fully the next day, but now merely encloses a cheque for Miss Le Thière. He is surprised and sorry about poor old Wallett - a good fellow to whom he gave a little testimonial in Blackpool. He thought him comfortably off but feels sure his letter is genuine. He encloses £50 for Wallett and £5 for Miss Le Thière. He is glad about 'Dead Heart' of which he has good reports. Last night £149 ordinary price - working tip top. (Postscript:) All splendid about Divines. He would telegraph to reassure Wallett.

Notes: There are further letters about money for Roma Le Thière in 1894. She acted in 'Ravenswood' in 1890.

By the time he gets the letter Toole's readings for which he predicts success, will be under way. Love to Miss Terry & Irving - just time for the mail. He has given a letter of introduction to Irving to Mr Knox - a good fellow, for whom see the account of the dinner given Toole the day before. Knox is anxious to know Irving, well liked and a good business man. Love to all friends, Loveday, Bram [Stoker] and all in the provinces.

Content Summary: He has not yet heard about Irving's engagement at the Grand [Islington] or his readings and is anxious. Toole's business is splendid and audiences more than enthusiastic. He mentions parts played and after 12 nights has near £1000. House is smaller than Melbourne and he prefers Sydney - people hospitable - invitations every day. Lord Carrington the governor most jolly. Toole fudges through the speeches pretty well. He sends interview from 'Herald' referring to the sly joke about Walter Lacy and James Anderson. Lots of para. about Irving. When he comes say 'Hamlet' by the gentleman who gave Toole the lovely snuff box. Snuff box has given pleasure to thousands. Next Brisbane for 3 weeks. Love to Miss Terry.

Content Summary: Further enthusiasm about Sydney and Australia. He will try to return to Sydney and Melbourne in December after New Zealand. He has received the 'Manchester Examiner' with a fine article on Irving's reading. Send him all notices - there are anti-English papers there. Very glad Irving got Garrick sweep winner ... He always has Irving's portrait on his table to keep an eye on him. Irving could take his readings to lots of places - Macbeth, Hamlet, &c. without the Band. Irving's and Ellen Terry's voices are music enough. Good wishes.
Published: -
Notes: Thin pages crossed and difficult to read. Irving and Ellen Terry toured with a reading of 'Macbeth' with an orchestra playing Sullivan's music.
