Content Summary: Irving spoke so sweetly of her husband at the delightful evening at the theatre with her daughters that she will never forget. The next day she looked among the sketches and studies for one that would interest Irving and offers a little portrait of Fechter in 'Hamlet'. She wishes it had been larger, but Fechter himself was pleased with it and she hopes Irving will accept it with New Year wishes. If he is ever in the area and will call to see her and her studio she will be delighted.

Content Summary: On his return from Switzerland he found the photo of Laroche he had asked a Viennese friend to get for Irving. He had letters from W. Wilbrandt(?) the Director of the Vienna Hoftheater and from the Intendant General of the Weimar Hoftheater to whom he had written about their 'Faust' productions. The production of 'Faust' in Vienna is nearly complete without cuts. Baron Loen is interested that Irving is to play Mephisto and offers help. Weimar uses the Devreuil edition with wide scope for music. The music is by Pasceni(?)/Lassen and belongs to the Intendant General. What does Irving wish? Would he like the music and stage managers' books from Vienna and Weimar? Compliments to Miss Terry.

Notes: Irving had commissioned his own text version and music for the Lyceum 'Faust'.

Content Summary: Owing to his travels on the Pacific Coast and Central America he has not yet seen Irving's 'Faust' in which he was interested. He and his wife will come to one of the next performances. During their last stay in Amsterdam they saw a good deal of the Duke of Saxe Meiningen and the Duchess who hope to come over the next month and see Irving in 'Faust'. They said flattering things about Irving and Miss Terry which he is happy to report.

Author: Vezin, Hermann
Address: 10, Lancaster Place, Strand, WC.
Recipient: Irving, Henry
Address: -
Date: 1897, Jan., 7
Document Type: Letter (2 p.)
Content Summary: Vezin is glad that Irving's general health is better although the sprain must be a nuisance. Rejoices to read in papers that Irving has friends who know more about his business than he himself does and that they are liberal in their suggestions. All he suggests is that Irving could engage him in any part in a future production and he would be glad. The longer he waits the more hopeless he gets and he is no longer particular about parts or salary.

Content Summary: Many years before Phelps told Vezin that Bulwer Lytton had made a very good translation of Oedipus Tyrannus but could not produce it because of theme of incest. The BP [British Public] has got over that now. A few years ago Vezin wrote to Lady Lytton , Bulwer Lytton's daughter-in-law asking if play still existed but it has not turned up. If Irving applied it might be found and be worth his while. The Theatre Francais did it at Drury Lane a few years before and Cambridge undergraduates in the original Greek. He had a great treat at the Lyceum on Friday night.

Notes: 'Oedipus' not listed by Nicoll. Vezin probably saw 'Peter the Great'.

Content Summary: Hates to ask but if Irving will let him have what he proposed he will be very glad. Dr Aliborn to whom he took Arthur that day is hopeful about him. He would like to introduce Arthur to Irving. He is a general favourite and an unofficial young gentleman. He is the best Iago he has had and also played Claudius and Gratiano with Vezin in the previous year. Would Irving let him know when and where he might bring him without bothering Irving?

Notes: Arthur Vezin, 1878-1930, actor. Vezin was probably also requesting loan.

Content Summary: Ought to have repaid Irving's loan of £150 before this and is sorry he cannot do it this day. Disappointed with the run of 'Bachelors' and debts incurred at the Opera Comique have come upon him through misunderstanding on signed agreement etc. He would prefer Irving not to answer this letter. He has not forgotten his obligation and hopes to repay in a day or two.

Content Summary: Thanks Irving and would be delighted to play at his theatre. Suggests £40 a week as appropriate salary but he now has another offer after his enforced idleness. Not sure how he is bound to author of 'The Monk's Room' playing at the Olympic that day. He will write to him as he agreed to play part if done at night - would be sorry to miss it but is uncertain how soon author will get another theatre. If the offer is only to play his original part in 'Christina' which for some reason was given to Willard who has disappointed he will let Irving know as soon as he hears from the author. P.S. He recommends a former pupil Miss [Beatrice?]Kentish, who has been walking-on for Irving. She is worth a small part and has a letter from Mr Reilly whom she met in America.

Author: Irving, Henry
Address: Hotel Lincoln, Pittsburgh, PA.
Recipient: Brereton, Austin
Address: -
Date: [1904?], Jan., 15
Document Type: Letter (2 p.)
Content Summary: He congratulates on a change for the better. All very well - a bad season though never a reason to complain. Does Brereton know something of the C.G. benefit? Is it for the lady? He thought poor Welch(?) had a fair income? There's a correspondent named Ormesby Burton(?) who sends the most wierd (sic) news from London - sometimes scandalous & sensational, and he seems to be a particular pal of Wyn Thomas. (Postscript:) He agrees they do not seem to have pushed Brereton's book. He has not seen an allusion to it in an American paper.
Published: -
Notes: The book is probably 'The Lyceum and Henry Irving', 1903. Welch may be the actor & manager James Welch.
