Content Summary: Ellen's letter has been following him about so thought he would inform her of arrangements for 'Becket', principally for two months from April. In Autumn a season of 10-12 weeks - with repertory. No intention of doing anything new - the old plays are the attraction and as one cannot go on for ever. What are her Autumn engagements? Is there anyone she can recommend for Rosamund? A peaceful, graceful sort of creature with a personality interesting to the audience? There can be no great actress for they don't exist, but it must be someone who could be winning and moving with a reverence for the Archbishop and adoration for the King. The very opposite of the Hackney! ...

Content Summary: As she says, how long will their work go on? He would be glad to end in October 1906 when he will have been on stage for fifty years. Much can be done with properly organised farewell tours in 2 or 4 years. If possible they ought to be together which is what the public wants. How beautiful the first 'Becket' was and impossible to match. He sees that Master Edward is starting a dramatic school, not to be left out of it. He thinks he and Ellen should - they would have lots of pupils.

Content Summary: Stoker has told her that if an engagement comes up she may accept it. On 8th December she had written when 'Becket' was to replace 'Dante' about their position and his reply tied them from trying to relieve him of their salaries. After repeated requests, the decision that day comes too late for them to find other work that season. She feels wounded and surprised to be in a prejudicial position. 'Becket' was produced after her contract had expired and she was not re-engaged, although there was a possible part for which someone had to be employed and this is a blow to her professional standing. Worse, it is to take place not in town where a more popular name might attract, but in the provinces where she has long held a prominent position.
