Wishes before or after the Autumn tour the two weeks were possible but afraid it hardly is. It would be too soon to begin and too late - too near Xmas. He often thinks as Ellen does as to how long this work will go on. For himself he thinks that two years more should end it and that after the lectures they should together prepare farewells. In two years as much could be done as in four and they would be together. This would gratify the public which has some sentiment concerning them. What does she think? Keep the idea to herself for a time. He has little confidence in the advice of others but she should hear their old friend Mrs Edwards on the subject. A clever old lady and Mark Harris(?) used to call her 'the boss'. They were all delighted with Ellen's messages. He went there for an informal meal with Stoker and Laurence whose wife could not come. Found twelve ladies there who apologised that their husbands were too busy to come. He hinted that he was a little busy, too! A lot of money has been lost in New York recently. Desmond Baker of Baltimore has lost a million sterling in the shipping trust. Irving will see William Winter that night - he is giving up work to live in California. For the eight Spring weeks he has cast Miss Hackney as Rosamund and Mrs Cecil Raleigh as Eleanor. She is a sort of wild cat and they can fight it out between themselves. How beautiful the first 'Becket' was and how impossible to equal it in any way. He will be glad to get aboard, away from monotonous inanities with a little time to himself. They have had a very hard session; rough work with a (hostile?) 'Dante'. Leaving behind in Chicago, Freddie, the call boy, who has typhoid. They leave on Saturday and when he arrives Ellen will be in Cheltenham. Loveday left last Saturday for everything has to be done for 'Becket' - Harker's scenery tried, rehearsals day and night. God bless you. |

Signed Henry. Written at end of final American tour (Oct. 1903 - March 1904). It is probably the final version of the draft recorded by R. Manvell (see Letter 4847). Irving played 'Dante' for only a few performances in New York - the American public did not respond. Laurence's wife was Mabel Hackney, also in the company. Mrs Edwards may be the wife of Henry Sutherland Edwards. |
