He was grieved although hardly surprised by her letter as it will leave her more lonely than ever. He wishes he could come to her. With her sorrow must be the remembrance of her loving friendship to poor Jane - one of the best of creatures. He hopes she will go away for a little from a house of kindness and charity, which are welcome offerings to God. He will hope to see her. He is there for a little - he loves this country for he is "half native and to the manner born". For a few days he was with Harry at Sheringham which he thinks she would like. Harry is now at Broadstairs with Dorothea and the Bairds. Would she like Broadstairs? There is a comfortable hotel, the Grand. Dorothea has a little house: 2 Pierrepont Villas. With love and constant affection. |

He has just engaged Miss [Edith Wynne] Matthison for 2 years beginning in Cardiff giving details of her salary. He feels importance of Portia in London & America, and they can safely count on Olivia, Henrietta Maria and even Rosamund should Miss [Maude] Fealy fail them. He suggests the programme for the opening week in Cardiff and sets out in detail the advertising programme he wants. Next week he will send the form. Preliminary announcement should be important. If they both think hard they will get something good - failing this Moberly Bell. |

Stoker's note states this refers to P. Burton (possibly Percy Burton a business manager), 18 Aviemore Gardens, W. Kensington. A note "Shall I write to him" - "Ireland sunny sea - go to see him" might suggest a telephone conversation. Irving was seeking staff for his final tour. |
