He thanks Irving for that evening's performance of 'Macbeth'. He has vivid memories of Edmund Kean, Macready and lesser stars but until now his ideal not only of Macbeth but Shakespearean interpretation has never been fulfilled. This is with Irving's Hamlet and the first night of 'Macbeth' in mind. The wholeness of the interpretation is unequalled, He hopes to be able to sleep but wonders if Mrs Wills will. Thanks for them both. (Postscript:) He apologises for being incoherent through enthusiasm. |

| Content Summary: |
Mr [Henry] Compton has asked her to do something for his benefit. Such a motley performance is difficult for her - could they do anything together? - an act from Shakespeare - or 'King René's Daughter' as acted for Irving's benefit if Mrs Bateman would allow. She finds monster performances painful and derogatory to her art. It would save writing if Irving could call on Sunday after morning service? Mr Martin goes to the Prince of Wales at Sandringham the next day and will not be back until Monday. He is against her acting in this mélange, but they would do anything for Mr Compton who they like and esteem. (Postscript) She may be out of town anyway and then cannot appear. |

This might refer to one of Irving's three papers on Shakespeare' s 'Macbeth' and 'Hamlet' published in 'The Nineteenth Century' 1877-79 or the Address at the Perry Barr Institute, 1878, has been suggested. |
