Content Summary: ... How much Irving contributes to the brightness of each day. She knows the town he is in well and imagines him by the fire thinking of "The Shadow". Mr Critchett forbids her to write and she is in poor spirits. Mr St John talks of going the next month: he would otherwise lose his position and £700 a year is not enough to live on. He is anxious for news of Irving, who she thinks was never acting better. She sends The Morning Post with a letter to interest him and talks of the progress of the yacht, seen off Yarmouth, Isle of Wight, and the absent Brigade.

He thanks her and the Baroness for the 22 votes which will gladden the heart of the poor mother ... He wishes he were a poet and could write some thoughts to his Shadow mother. ... He always liked Bassanio's helplessness "only my blood speaks". Poor Trin has hurt his foot but will soon be well. Irving often talks to Trin about Mrs Brown.

Document Type: Letter (7 p.)
Content Summary: What a boon are telegrams. Mr St John was sitting with them when Irving's arrived with details of Glasgow and the night he went off to Belfast. Mr St John was impressed. She has just received his letter with glorious extracts from the papers. She will think about Louis, but her first thought is that Richard is a young man, and she compares the two characters. Irving's success cheers many at a dreary time. There is a nice account of the P. of Wales visit to Dubosq in that day's Theatre. She sent the last Wednesday's with the account of the Dinner and Dublin to Mr St John....

Notes: Dictated to Baroness Burdett -Coutts, who writes her own letter (entered separately) on p.8. The Prince and Princess of Wales saw 'The Lyons Mail' at the Lyceum in July. The Dublin expedition is probably that on 18th June during the London run of 'The Lyons Mail' when he gave a reading of Shakespeare and Dickens.
