He is not yet a convict and this was his one lapse for which he has no defence. He does not wish to tell his father and friends, who could help him, of his disgrace. It was the temptation of temporary want. He wishes Mr Sugden and Edmund Yates could read his letter. He thanks God the swindle did not succeed.
