Content Summary: Next app/ce at Lyceum will be as Napoleon. Meanwhile Richard postponed for fitting opportunity, for although he is careful he has decided to begin work again with a part requiring less physical exertion. Most necessary suggestions have been made concerning the future policy of the Lyceum and the casting of plays - but the only important additions to the present company have been Miss Gertrude Kingston & Wm Mackintosh. 'Madame Sans-GĂȘne' has been in rehearsal for the last fortnight and will be produced in about a month's time. On Saturday January 30th 'Olivia' for 12 night(s), Miss Ellen Terry as Olivia with Herman Vezin in his original part of Dr Primrose.

Notes: A roughly written note written during Irving's convalescence after injuring his knee after the first night of 'Richard III'. The letter is unsigned, but may be complete. Scott, who adds the date, notes that it was written in Irving's sickroom after the accident and it may have been written during his visit.

Content Summary: Sorry to hear of Irving's accident which he hopes not serious. Richard III nearly killed him twice and he has damaged kneecap. Irving works too hard. He hears the 'Richard III' production was suberb. He knows Irving does not like him, but tell him Mansfield, despite his sins, harks back to the old days. He offers to come over if Irving is suffering financially.

Notes: Irving had damaged tendons after the first night of 'Richard III'. He did not like Mansfield in the part, and Mansfield had left England heavily indebted to Irving. Irving may have appreciated the irony of the situation.

With a press cutting from the 'Daily Telegraph' of 21 January 1897 of 'A Chat with Sir Henry Irving by Clement Scott' about Irving's injury and plans for the Lyceum including the future cast of 'Madame Sans GĂȘne'. Irving had spent Christmas in bed and Toole had come up from Brighton to be with him.
