He is interested in what she has said about 'Esmond' and wishes it success. Another version has recently been produced in Manchester. She should have the best advice and he suggests consulting Mr Pinero. Pinero would call at her request, his address: 63 Hamilton Terrace, NW. Irving invites her to see 'Richard [III] one night. It would be a real pleasure to welcome her. |

| Notes: |
The play 'Esmond' was a version of W.M. Thackeray's novel by Margaret Oliphant, which does not seem to have been produced. Eton College holds a professionally typed copy of the text. Another play 'Henry Esmond' by Thomas Edgar Pemberton was produced in Edinburgh and London in 1897; the Manchester play is unidentified. |

Stoker kindly saw him on Saturday afternoon and now he sends the story mentioned. If there were two Sir Henrys in drama it might appeal to one of them, but Irving stands alone in his ability to play the king and enthral 20 men with eye and voice as [the strong man] Samson supports 20 bodies at the Aquarium. Get Irving to read his story - Barr will lend his revolver to Stoker to enforce this. |

He wrote a long time before and had hoped to have heard from Irving. He has been anxious after reading of the disasters that have affected Irving's projects, and is happy to read that he has started work again and has appeared as Richard. He is still grinding on for six weeks more. They had great success in New York and Boston. Philadelphia is less good. They have produced 'Ceuta' which is a struggle. He hopes to get the Court Theatre in London where he feels he must appear. Would Irving or Stoker write as he in anxious for news. |
