Content Summary: He is told Irving thinks his criticism of 'Richard III' implies the same of Irving as it did of [Edmund] Kean. He denies this or that the article has been so interpreted. Irving has not that reputation and underrates his immunity. Irving estimates Shaw's work too cheaply. He is the most difficult subject for a critic, and particularly for an author-critic. Shaw still stands by his article, particularly the parts about Shakespeare.
Published: L. Irving, p.604; Shaw, Collected letters, Vol.I, p.751.
Notes: Irving's friends had interpreted Shaw's criticism of 'Richard III' in 'The Saturday Review' as implying that Irving was drunk, as was sometimes the case with Edmund Kean.
