Notes: The envelope is postmarked from Canterbury. Irving was reading Tennyson's 'Becket' for the Canterbury Cathedral Restoration Fund at 2 pm on 31st May. The newspaper press release preserved, predated 7th May, gives details of the event, of the murder of Thomas Becket in 1170, and general arrangements, including the sale of reserved seats at 1 guinea by letter from Mr Crow, Mercury Lane, Canterbury.

He writes that Irving will play 'Becket' in the crypt of Canterbury Cathedral for some charity in about a month. Le Sage would like to publish a paragraph to confirm an interesting event or contradict French imagination. Such a performance would be most realistic. Please let him know.
