Document Type: Letter (3 p.)
Content Summary: The enclosed came on Tuesday - no explanation - a large bill. A hard lesson - they cannot forget the friends who have stood by, but he is sure all will get well. He is arranging business and will want a little more - about £300 - and Stoker had better write to Winchelsea and ask for it for Lyceum affairs, not for Irving, and pay it into Coutts's. He hopes Stoker is having a good time as he must need a good rest. Sheringham suits his needs - the country around is beautiful but the place itself a sort of Westgate. He likes the sea.

Notes: Dated by Stoker, and envelope postmarked 9/8/97. There is a sum on back totalling 2030 - perhaps pounds. Ellen Terry's cottage was at Winchelsea.

Address: Hooe, Battle, Sussex
Recipient: Karl, Charles >>
Address: -
Date: [1897?], [Aug.?]
Document Type: Letter (2 p.)
Content Summary: They might be able to get crucifixes imported from Russia in Whitechapel. It would ensure authentic detail. He has written to Kropotkin and will let Karl know what he says. He is getting the photo to suggest the makeup of Kecak(?). This time he wants to get a more real Russia in their costumes than has been done previously in Britain or America.

Notes: It is not certain that this applies to Laurence Irving's 'Peter the Great'. Some of Karl's designs for that Lyceum production are digitised on the V&A website.

Date: 1897, Aug., 14
Document Type: Letter (4+ p.)
Content Summary: Very glad to get her letter. He is very tired; doesn't know whether it is work or old age - probably both. Laurence is coming to see him to talk about 'Peter the Great'. Peter's part is too long, as is the part of Alexis. Laurence is a very observing (sic) young man. Irving discusses possibles for the part of Alexis -"a terrible ass". Considers H.B.Irving, Gordon Craig who fidgets, and Johnston Forbes Robertson. He is sending Ellen the costume book but has better in London ...
Published: -
Notes: Probably incomplete. 'Peter the Great' by Laurence Irving opened at the Lyceum on 1st January 1898. Irving played the title role. The role of Alexis was eventually played by Robert Taber, the American actor, as Forbes Robertson turned down the part.
