Content Summary: The last night they welcomed the newly elected Laurence to the Garrick Club. Now they see little of Irving they must console themselves with his boys. He expresses great admiration for Irving whatever he may have said about individual impersonations, and is a devoted friend. He thinks Irving is the very greatest actor - greater than Garrick or Kean or Talma, etc. He values him as a man and artist in his scorn for money, and expresses further praise and friendship. He sends New Year wishes.

Notes: John Martin Harvey was contracted to produce 'The Only Way', a French Revolution play as Irving was about the produce 'Robespierre'. In the end Harvey went ahead on 16th February 1899 transferring to the Prince of Wales Theatre in April, and his success did not diminish that of Irving's production which opened on 15th April. Robespierre's son Olivier was then played by H.K. Bellew.
