Author: Irving, Sir Henry >>
Address: Royal Bath Hotel, East Cliff, Bournemouth
Recipient: Irving, Laurence Sidney Brodribb >>
Address: -
Date: 1899, Jan., 18
Document Type: Letter (3 p.)
Content Summary: He is writing out his part and returns Act I, the rest to follow. In going through Laurence is sure to revise things and he has turned down a page to show how he wants 'Robespierre' condensed in expression with fewer adjectives. He takes him to have had a rather pedantic sharp expression - & the fewer words the better. As often as an emphatic syllable can be the last word of a sentence the better. How funny about the pretender? That must have been nearly 100 years after. He supposes Laurence wrote about scenery sketches & estimates and will hear soon. All love.
Published: -
Notes: The pretender here is unidentified. There is also an encouraging and affectionate letter from Ellen Terry to Laurence from Whitstable, Friday, about 'Robespierre', reprinted by L. Irving, p.626-27.

Recipient: Stoker, Bram (Abraham) >>
Address: [London?]
Date: 1899, Jan., 19
Document Type: Letter (3 p.)
Content Summary: Furniss has put Irving in the current issue of 'Fair Game' in the first of a complimentary series of portraits called "Longheads" and also made a suggestion of a national testament in his honour based purely on his achievements. After printing he received Stoker's telegram asking him to withdraw proposal. Furniss was surprised and puzzled. Too complex to put in a slip as paper went out. If he had stopped printing he would have lost many thousands of pounds. (Postscript:) He has written to Irving.

He lists financial and other arrangements including with Coutts and the Nassau Press. They rehearse the next day 11 to 1.30, he has the theatre from 2 to 5 and would like to see Stoker some time.
Published: -
Notes: Dated from envelope postmark. Preparations for staging 'The Only Way' at the Lyceum during Irving's convalescence. It opened on 16th February. Stoker presumably went to America about arrangements for the Autumn tour. Patrick E. Doherty is named as Acting Manager; Howson was the Company treasurer.

Notes: It is not clear how this fits with the approach from Loveday about 'The Only Way' as a rival of 'Robespierre' at the Lyceum. Harvey states that a letter was written refusing the request and prints on p.223 in facsimile part of a letter written to him by Irving.
