Content Summary: He is delighted to have the book from Irving. He cut off the friendly autograph from the wrapper and pasted it inside the cover. The book is clever - a solid piece of work with promise of better to come. Irving will not however bring all round to his view. Smalley is glad the new play is a success and the new part so brilliant. He hopes to be in England in the autumn. Good luck to Irving with a friendly message to H.B. Irving.

Bring 'Becket' which will be very popular, but bring plenty of plays as Australians love change and will want to see Irving in many of his parts. Tennyson is now glad he came although he held back at first. The Australians are true loyal people and kind to him and his family. Best wishes from his wife and himself.
