He got the letter she wrote as she left for Stirling when he returned from the Storys. He is disappointed about America as she could easily have played in 'Dante' there although she did not at Drury Lane. It would not have been a difficult part, but very effective, and would have given the opportunity for the production of other things. As he is sure Stoker explained, her name on top of the bill while she is out of the play week after week causes discontent and is bad for business and everything else. He will not discuss this but if they had been together for another tour with a farewell repertory they should have had a triumph with a worthy ending. Edie might make a good spirit Beatrice? Their friend "the mayor" has married. A pleasant day for him. |

Signed with a version of the X with loop. Ellen Terry marks the sentence about an effective part with three exclamation marks. She had refused to take part in 'Dante' at Drury Lane, and had decided not to tour America with Irving in 1903. She was clearly ill on this autumn tour in Britain. Irving's friend Robert Story was Principal of Glasgow University. |

She sends photo. Could Irving use her when he is making up his cast for Drury Lane the next year? Would he see her when he returns to town? She would love to be in the company. Would Stoker mention her? |
