Author: Irving, Sir Henry >>
Address: Tours 1903-1904 paper [Manchester]
Recipient: Stoker, Bram (Abraham) >>
Address: 20 Bedford Street, W.C. (?)
Date: 1903, Sept., 29
Document Type: Letter (3 p.)
Content Summary: Will Stoker read this letter to the shareholders. It seems a pity to change the Lyceum from a theatre and he has doubts as to the success of such a scheme. With his views of the possible good influence of a theatre on the community he could not agree to the proposal, and under ordinary circumstances would have voted against it, being willing to sacrifice his own holding which would be a considerable loss. If the majority of the shareholders wish to make the change he will abstain from any participation and just express his opinion. He would pay his share for 2 or 3 years of an alternative scheme to support the debenture interest, sinking fund, etc. until a purchaser can be found.
Published: Brereton, Vol.II, p.300-01.
Notes: Written by a clerk in a clear hand and signed by Irving. THM/37/1/56 is a typewritten transcript of a newspaper extract giving the full letter text which was read at the shareholders' meeting of Lyceum Ltd on 30th September 1903. Stoker gave additional details of Irving's financial arrangements with Lyceum Ltd. When no purchaser for the Lyceum came forward it was proposed and agreed to convert it into a music hall.
