He hopes four or five trustees will be chosen as some are abroad. Part of the sum collected should be placed on deposit at 2%. Best wishes to him and to the Chairman. |

A facsimile. Little seems known of Gray who contributed comic strips and caricatures to 'Judy' 1887-89, but the letter heading is much earlier. |

Send word if 5 people can fit in the box he has been sent - if not please send one stall and thank "Maitre Irving" for the pleasure of seeing him again, like the torture of several hours posing again for the portrait which is begun. |

In French. BS replied 20/7/82. A box for 'Romeo and Juliet'. Irving's portrait has been dated to 1880, but must be later. |

Sorry that he is unable to see Merivale the next day but he can see him on Tuesday or Thursday for half an hour if convenient. Merivale will understand that until they close he has not an unoccupied moment. Will Merivale send him the play (which he is glad is now a fact) or wait until the week after next. |

Probably referring to 'Edgar and Lucy' which became 'Ravenswood'. |

He states when he is free on Tuesday and Wednesday. On Thursday he and his wife leave for 2 weeks in Devon and 4 in Switzerland. He knows Irving is busy but wants him to hear the play - he wants to display it and Irving cannot read his writing at present. He prefers to have it copied after Irving has made suggestions. However he will send it act by act and they can drink at parting. He wishes Irving were not going to America which is a beastly place. He is satisfied with 'Edgar & Lucy' [Ravenswood] and thinks he has hit Irving and Ellen Terry to advantage. It is his best play and probably his last. |
