Content Summary: He thanks Irving for the box. His old-fashioned estimation of art is annoyed when the painting room skills are subordinate to the lime light man. Acting however has not degenerated so much, and Irving's light and shade is truth to nature and full of insight. May he long contribute to the intellectual enjoyment of London.

Content Summary: ... "I'm expecting Bastien Lepage every moment. I'd cut up the nasty thing, but think you like it."
Published: Holmes, C.J. Self and partners, 1936.
Notes: A fragment of a letter pasted to the back of Bastien Lepage's informal portrait which Irving gave to Ellen Terry by 1890 and which she presented to the National Portrait Gallery in 1910. She asked for the return of the fragment which presumably no longer exists. Irving several times destroyed portraits he did not like, notably that by John Singer Sargent. The dates of related Letters 7614-15 might be incorrect.
