Content Summary: ... auction - they have contributed 40% to every production except 'Robespierre'. Mansfield bought all the 'Coriolanus' stuff for £1200. Irving's share was £800 which he handed to them as part of the £1000 so does not pay so much. He is glad to wash hands of arrangement to which he gave 3 years and half £27,000 profits. He has arranged the Autumn tour as she knows, also a short Spring one he thought she said she would join. Laurence is in America, working on 'Dante' there, which he will show her when he has it. He hopes she will play in it: she could do the two worthy parts of mother and daughter. He thought Byam Shaw could do the costumes, and with 'Dante' and 1 or 2 standbys they could have splendid American tour. He said she would be in 'Dante' to stop the scurrilous paragraphs flooding America. He thinks Drury Lane will be their theatre. A noble place for 'Dante' which he believes in. Arthur Collins wants him to go there. They might make it home and it is the only free theatre they could move into easily. He will need to strengthen the company and he wants an up to date cast, especially young men. They could always reduce the proscenium opening. He will let her know. He did consider the Adelphi but it would be a come-down and [Thomas] Davis, and Greet backed by Carr would fleece him. He hoped she would get some summer. There is none there yet. God bless her.

Notes: Signed with an X cross; and with a line in the margin by Ellen Terry against the reference to scurrilous paragraphs. Irving had come up from Tintagel for the Coronation of Edward VII on 9th August (see Letter 8220). The Lyceum had been vacated and some contents sold while Irving settled accounts with the Lyceum Company Ltd. Arthur Collins had offered Irving use of Drury Lane on 7th August. See Letters 545-46, 6628-29.
